Rubén Jaramillo (1898 - 1962)

Jaramillo nació en 1898 en el Mineral de Zacualpan, Estado de México. Su padre fue Atanasio Jaramillo y su madre Romana Ménez Nava, quienes por problemas económicos se mudaron a Tlaquiltenango, estado de Morelos. Ahí creció y asistió un poco a la escuela primaria en la que a lo sumo aprendió a medio leer y a escribir. Fue más autodidacta y asi adquirió el resto de su educación. Cierta formación religiosa evangélica le permitió entender sobre las injusticias sufridas por los hombres del campo, con esa profesión religiosa se formó un carácter de líder desde su muy pobre juventud.

Desde los 15 años se identificó con los ideales del zapatismo morelense, se unió en 1914 a las fuerzas del general zapatista José Zorrillo, y posteriormente con el coronel zapatista Dolores Oliván. De ahí en adelante seguiría formando su carácter e ideología en diferentes momentos y experiencias.

Rubén Jaramillo conoció al General Lázaro Cárdenas cuando éste fue postulado por el Partido Nacional Revolucionario (PNR) a la Presidencia de la República y cuando visitó Morelos en su gira proselitista. Rubén Jaramillo le hizo al candidato presidencial la petición de crear un ingenio azucarero en Zacatepec, para la explotación racional de la caña, y que fuera el conducto para que la justicia social alcanzara al campesinado regional.

Convencido del problema, el General Lázaro Cárdenas aceptó y asumió el compromiso de construir en esas tierras un ingenio azucarero. La promesa, como tantas otras que hizo y cumplió el de Jiquilpan, fue cumplida, y en 1938, en el mismo año de la expropiación petrolera, el ingenio Emiliano Zapata fue inaugurado solemnemente. En marzo de ese mismo año y por acuerdo del ya presidente Lázaro Cárdenas, Rubén Jaramillo fue presidente del Primer Consejo de Administración de la nueva factoría.

Rubén Jaramillo (1898 - 1962)

Rubén Jaramillo was born in 1898 in Mineral de Zacualpan, in the state of Mexico. His father was Atanasio Jaramillo and his mother, Romana Ménez Nava. Because of economic problems, they moved to Tlaquiltenango, in the state of Morelos, where he grew up and attended elementary school for a brief time, learning to read and write to some extent. Rubén Jaramillo was more of a self-learner and that is how he acquired the rest of his education. Religious training helped him understand the injustices suffered by men working in the fields and, out of his very impoverished youth, with his religious principals he developed leadership qualities.

From the time he was 15 years old, Rubén Jaramillo identified with the Morelense Zapatista ideals; in 1914 he joined the forces of Zapatista General José Zorrillo, and later joined up with Zapatista Colonel Dolores Oliván. From then on, different moments and experiences continued shaping his personality and ideology.

When General Lázaro Cárdenas was running for president of the Republic in the National Revolutionary Party (Partido Nacional Revolucionario (PNR)), he visited Morelos during his campaign tour. It was then that Rubén Jaramillo met the general and proposed to the presidential candidate that a sugar processing mill be created in Zacatepec, in order to reasonably cultivate sugar cane; and in so doing, create social justice for the farmers in the region.

General Lázaro Cárdenas, convinced about the problem, accepted the proposal and committed to building a sugar mill on the land in this region. He fulfilled his promise, as he did with many others that he made, and in 1938, the same year as the oil expropriation, the Emiliano Zapata mill was solemnly inaugurated. In March of the same year, with the approval of then President Lázaro Cárdenas, Rubén Jaramillo became president of the factory´s First Administrative Advisory Committee.
